Saving Lives

This is how we roll at Marine SLC, old lifesavers never die, they are always there when needed. Leon (Rubber) du Preez one of our Life Members (1982) still showing what he’s got by firstly identifying someone in trouble and then effecting a rescue in another part of the world.

Club Renovations

The odour in the ladies change room – we have ordered the drainage parts to rectify the problem.

Projects planned for Marine SLC include a neater permanent braai facility for members use to take advantage of the balmy Durban summer and mild winter days.

Thanks to Terry Kinloch for the image rendering, now we just looking for some skilled bricklayers to come to our aid and assist with the building of our new braai.

Worlds Fund Raising

Our youngsters showing drive and initiative to start fundraising for World Champs in PE taking place end of November. This is the Marine spirit we want to see. In 3 quick early fundraising initiatives they have already made R10000. Thank you for supporting them and showing them that hard work and effort gets results.

The Dredger

The Dredger that you can see working offshore is responsible for giving us The Mound that delivers big juicy swell in summers Mozambique cyclone season and the Capes winter cold front season. The dredger dumps its sand load off North Beach beyond the shark nets to form The Mound as we know it, an area of shallow water due to all these sand deposits. Many of you will have seen large breaking surf off the South Pier at the harbour entrance on a big swell day. This is due to formation or buildup of sand that has accumulated off the end of the pier over time and looks like it wants to close the harbour entrance. Photos show how this sand build up has creeped around the end of the South Pier and has formed a beach along the pier that used to drop off straight into deep water. Appears that dredging is taking place lately to deal with this build up.

Life at Marine
5. What’s your favourite thing about Marine Surf Lifesaving Club?
Location. Facilities. People.

6. Early morning paddle or late afternoon swim?
Early morning.

7. Flat water or messy conditions?
I enjoy both – ideally, flat in the mornings during the week, and runs on a Saturday morning.

8. If Marine had a theme song, what should it be?
Johnny Clegg – Impi

On the Water
9. Your favourite ocean conditions to train or paddle in.
Flat. Warm. Sunrise.

10. Your least favourite conditions (be honest).
North east with bluebottles and large swell breaking on the bank in front of Marine.

11. Biggest wipe-out or “that didn’t go to plan” moment.
End of SA Champs at Toti some years ago – a great paddle, following Herman Chalupsky’s line. Around the turning buoy at Toti (pumped and overconfident), I took the first wave at the backline, and got “smoked” (sounded like a freight train). About a 10 minute swim, watching all my competitors paddling past me to the finish!

12. Best paddle, swim, or patrol day you’ve had at Marine.
Most days are a privileged opportunity! I do enjoy a building NE – towards Umhlanga, and back on the runs…

13. One skill you’re proudest of improving since joining.
Pull-ups
