OUTSTANDING MEMBERSHIP FEES
Membership fees that have been invoiced on a monthly basis since 1 April 2026 and not yet paid are in process of membership suspension or termination. Please understand that Marine SLC needs your fees to ensure the smooth running and upkeep of your club and yours and all the members best interests.
Due to not payment of membership fees, we have now suspended 40 members. It will be sad to see them go if they choose not to honour their membership obligation.

Club Renovations
Men’s changerooms getting a new coat of paint to compliment the new tiling.
Work on the Ladies changerooms is going to be started soon, please be patient while the work is in progress. We are aiming to have everything ready and available before the work begins in order to get the task finished with minimal delay and inconvenience.
Work to be done is the refurbishment of the showers – Substitute shower brick walls with Perspex panels, replace shower heads, tile shower wall and floor, install lighting, paint changeroom walls. Use of the men’s showers can be done whilst work is in progress, this obviously just needs to be done with suitable co-ordination and sensibility.
Worlds Fund Raising
Our youngsters showing drive and initiative to start fundraising for World Champs in PE taking place end of November. This is the Marine spirit we want to see. Thank you for supporting them and showing them that hard work and effort gets results.
Blast from the past

Action photo of the MSLC craft rescue team back in the 1980’s leading the race to the finish line in the craft rescue event. A 5 man event where a draw took place on the beach beforehand, to see who would draw as patient and who would be paddler. All 5 team members had to be proficient at paddling a rescue ski and obviously everyone would hope their best paddler would draw as paddler and their smallest member as patient.
As luck would have it one particular champs Mark Lewin 6ft 10in managed to draw as patient and the smallest member of the club Colin Baxter around 5ft 1in drew paddler, a match up made in hell. The craft rescue event was a great team event, the patient had to swim to cans and the paddler would then leave the beach to collect his patient and paddle back to the beach. Catching a wave back with a patient onboard was the easy way back to the beach, rather than grinding back with a heavy load onboard. This event always provided great entertainment for the crowds especially in big surf where the craft had to be well handled to avoid losing its patient. A good paddler/patient combination could catch any size wave and ride it all the way to the beach, where the other 3 team members would pick up the craft with the paddler and carry the patient over the finish line, as per photo.
The secret to wave riding with a patient was to have the patient lie forward to gain speed to get onto the wave, then as soon as on the wave, to then quickly slide back as far as possible to lift the nose and have the weight aft. Doing this well allowed the two to catch almost any size wave and survive – Great Fun!

The Basics (Warm-up)
Name and nickname (and how you got it).
My name is Leshen, I’m mostly called Leshen, with a few people calling me Leshy.
How long have you been part of Marine Surf Lifesaving Club?
I’ve been part of Marine since 2016, that’s 10 fantastic years!
What first brought you down to the club?
Marine’s then coach, Russel Sadler, and his wife Carmel, brought me down to the beach one Saturday and taught me how to bodysurf. Safe to say I’ve been addicted to the beach since.
What’s your day job when you’re not in red and yellow?
When I’m not at Marine, I’m either at university, where I study a degree in Finance and Accounting, or I’m at work. I am currently an accounts intern at Videovision Entertainment, the producers of the famed Mandela movie!
Life at Marine
5. What’s your favourite thing about Marine Surf Lifesaving Club?
Marine has a sense of community that is seldom found elsewhere. Whether you’re down at the club everyday or every 2 months, it’s always as if you’ve never left.
6. Early morning paddle or late afternoon swim?
A little bit of both, it really depends on how I feel on the day.
7. Flat water or messy conditions?
Messy conditions for sure, it’s here the fun is!
8. If Marine had a theme song, what should it be?
Coast – Hailee Steinfeld
On the Water
9. Your favourite ocean conditions to train or paddle in.
Any conditions that include some decently sized waves.
10. Your least favourite conditions (be honest).
When the ocean is a washing machine, it makes a surf swim quite uncomfortable.
11. Biggest wipe-out or “that didn’t go to plan” moment.
Replacing the fin on my mallie and putting it on backwards. Will never forget how puzzled I was trying to figure why I never stayed on a wave that day.
12. Best paddle, swim, or patrol day you’ve had at Marine.
Probably a training session I remember when I was a nipper/junior. We were paddling by the shark nets and kept pushing each other off of our boards.
The Fun Stuff
14. Coffee before or after training?
After.
15. If you could swap crafts for a day, what would you choose?
Surfski, I rarely go on a ski so it’d be quite fun.
16. Who at the club would you want next to you in a rescue?
Tyler Bingham.
17. Who tells the best stories at the club?
From my experience, it’s between Matt Vosloo and Jarrod Todd.
18. Who takes training just a little too seriously?
Katelyn Todd.
Personal Insights
19. What does being part of a lifesaving club mean to you personally?
A lifesaving club, especially Marine, is something that becomes a part of your life no matter where you are in the world. The lessons learnt, friends made, and experiences I’ve been part of are things that grow me as a person and are forever pushing my expectations.
20. What keeps you coming back, even on tough days?
The accountability, your friends never let you forget a missed alarm.
21. Biggest lesson the ocean has taught you.
Patience and critical thinking are virtues.
22. One thing people might not know about you.
I am such a finance bro that I have a coffee mug with Excel Spreadsheets printed on it.
Quick-Fire Round
23. Sunrise or sunset?
Sunrise.
24. Summer or winter paddling?
Summer.
25. Energy bar or banana?
Energy bar.

It’s always daunting doing something new for the first time, but the Marine community makes you feel like you’ve been there for years.
Finish Strong
31. In one sentence, describe Marine Surf Lifesaving Club.
It’s an institution, not just a lifesaving club.
32. If you could say one thing to your fellow members, what would it be?
Someone is always looking forward to seeing you, remember that, even on your bad days.
